The Event
The 2026 Gallagher Insurance Challenge Wānaka Half Triathlon is scheduled for Saturday, 21 February 2026, in Wānaka, New Zealand.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps, the race features a 1.9 km swim in Lake Wānaka, a 90 km bike ride through rolling countryside, and a 21.1 km run along the scenic Clutha River trails. The course is renowned for its challenging terrain and breathtaking scenery.
The Challenge Wānaka Festival is a multi-day event that includes various races catering to all ages and abilities making it a great option for families. The event is celebrated for its warm, welcoming Kiwi atmosphere and its commitment to inclusivity and community. The 2026 edition also marks the 20th anniversary of Challenge Wānaka, highlighting its significance in the triathlon world.

The location
Wānaka is a picturesque resort town situated in the Otago region of New Zealand’s South Island. Nestled at the southern end of Lake Wānaka, it serves as a gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, offering a blend of natural beauty and outdoor adventure.
Wānaka’s combination of stunning landscapes, outdoor activities, and cultural events makes it a compelling destination for triathletes looking for both a great race experience and an opportunity to explore an interesting region.

Getting There
Athletes will need to fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN). There are several airport buses offering multiple daily departures. Another option is the SkyDrive Airport Express, which provides direct shuttle services between Queenstown and Wānaka, including stops at Queenstown Airport. The journey duration is about 1 hour and 40 minutes, depending on the specific route taken. SkyDrive operates four times daily in each direction, offering flexibility for travelers.
